The Moral Bargain – Evangelicals, Hypocrisy, and the Justification of Power (Part 4)

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of Trump’s support lies in his alignment with evangelical Christians, who have long championed moral purity and the defense of Christian values. Evangelicals have supported Trump despite his personal failings, including his multiple divorces, infidelity, and crude language. This support can be explained through a moral bargain: while Trump may be personally flawed, his political actions align with evangelical goals, particularly the appointment of conservative judges and the defense of religious freedom.

For many evangelical leaders, Trump’s presidency became an opportunity to achieve long-sought political victories. In this context, his character flaws were seen as secondary to the policy outcomes he could deliver, such as the confirmation of right-wing Supreme Court justices and the rollback of abortion rights. Trump’s support among evangelicals is therefore a strategic compromise—a trade-off between moral integrity and political power.

This dynamic has led to a deepening moral paradox within evangelical circles, where figures like Jerry Falwell Jr. and Franklin Graham have rationalized their support for Trump as part of a divine plan to restore “Christian values” in American public life. However, this alliance has resulted in a growing perception of hypocrisy, as younger evangelicals, disillusioned by the moral compromises of their elders, distance themselves from the religious right.

Whether these paradoxes will continue through Trum’s second term is yet to be seen, as many there are many forces, both positive and negative (depending on perspective), currently influencing voter sentiment.
