Biography

Benjamin Wells worked for Freshfields, Linklaters and Gide Loyrette Nouel, sitting his traineeship at CMS Cameron McKenna, prior to joining Belgravia Law.

Benjamin is a Solicitor-Advocate whose practice is centred on dispute resolution. He regularly represents clients in: (i) arbitral proceedings conducted under the auspices of leading arbitration institutions; and (ii) litigation in the English courts. He also sits as an arbitrator and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. All his cases have a cross-border element.

Issues that he resolves relate to commercial contracts, joint ventures, company and shareholder disputes, banking, investments, trading (including shipping), insolvency, international civil fraud and enforcement.

Benjamin has a particular focus on sanctions, asset-tracing, contentious trusts and matrimonial disputes. Benjamin is an executive committee member of the British-Kazakh Law Association, holds rights of audience at the Astana International Finance Centre.

Benjamin writes articles which are published internationally as well as having featured in articles for the Law Society of England and Wales.

  • Representing the minority shareholders of a mining plc in a corporate dispute to the value of £10 billion.
  • Representing an international energy concern in ICC arbitrations against an American engineering company. The engineering company pleads breach of contract relying on force majeure provisions in relation to export controls and sanctions.
  • Representing a global mineral fertiliser producer in ad hoc arbitration concerning a charter party agreement and delivery of goods. Progressing claims in damages and loss of profit.
  • Representing the purchaser of a glass manufacturing company as Claimant in a HKIAC arbitration in relation to a sale and purchase agreement and alleged misappropriation of funds during the sale process.
  • Representing a global steel concern in an LMAA arbitration concerning non-delivery of raw materials.
  • Regularly sitting as an arbitrator (nominated, presiding and sole) in arbitral proceedings conducted under the auspices of leading arbitration institutions.
