What first drew me to the profession was the combination of technical challenge and practical impact. I enjoyed analysing complex issues, but also the fact that the answer had to work in the real world for the client. As my career developed, the relationship side became equally important: understanding businesses, earning trust, and translating complicated rules into clear, commercially useful advice. That mix of problem-solving, continuous learning, and working with people is what has kept me engaged.
The most rewarding part is the combination of making a tangible difference for clients and helping colleagues develop. It is satisfying to take a complicated issue, identify a practical way forward, and give the client clarity and confidence. Equally, seeing team members grow, take on greater responsibility, and develop their own trusted client relationships is hugely rewarding.
One of the biggest challenges is balancing competing priorities. Clients understandably want quick, definitive answers, while good advice sometimes requires detailed analysis and input from several people. Managing those expectations without compromising quality can be demanding, but it is also an important part of the role.
he book that has probably shaped my thinking most is Simon Sinek’s Start With Why. It made me reflect on the importance of purpose at work. People perform at their best when they understand how their contribution fits into the bigger picture. I try to apply that by giving colleagues context, encouraging ownership, and connecting day-to-day work to the difference we make for clients.
One area I’m continuing to develop is stepping back from the immediate detail and creating more space for strategic thinking. In a client-focused role, it is easy to become absorbed in day-to-day priorities. I’m working on being more deliberate about looking ahead, identifying opportunities, and focusing my time where I can have the greatest impact.
A particularly interesting matter involved a yacht with stakeholders and activities spread across several countries. It required us to coordinate advice on the acquisition structure, VAT treatment, importation, charter activity, and ongoing compliance. Different jurisdictions could approach aspects of the arrangements differently, so the challenge was to bring the local advice together into one clear and workable position for the client.
What excites me most is the opportunity to combine strong local expertise with genuine international collaboration. In the yachting industry, clients, assets, ownership structures, and operations often span several jurisdictions, so no single adviser or office will always have the complete picture. A global network allows us to bring together the right people, share local insight, and give the client one clear and coordinated solution. I also find the relationship-building aspect particularly exciting. By getting to know colleagues across the network and understanding their strengths, we can collaborate more naturally, identify opportunities earlier, and provide a more seamless experience for clients. Ultimately, it is about using the collective expertise of the network to achieve more than any of us could deliver individually.
My advice would be to stay curious and never be afraid to ask questions. Technical knowledge develops with experience, but curiosity helps you understand the client’s business, identify the real issue, and continue learning. The strongest advisers do not just know the rules. They understand how those rules affect people and businesses in practice
